Shketan Mari National Drama Theatre

The first theater in the Mari region was opened on November 1, 1919. It was called the First Soviet Booth Theater of the Mari People. In 2019, the theater celebrated its 100th anniversary. In 1948 the theater was named in the honor of Yakov Mayorov-Shketan (a Mari playwright and journalist with a true name of Yakov Pavlovich Mayorov).

At present, the theater represents a combination of classics and theatrical experiments. The audience likes such well-loved performances, as “Salika”, “Vucho, mane, pӧrtylam/Sanya, Vanya, Rimas with them”, as well as the new performances “Kyrla. A ticket to life”, “Kӧkechympӧrtylta/The Snow Maiden”.

The theater performances are provided in the Mari language with simultaneous translation.
